More than displays: How ArgonFDS has grown into a complete C5ISR information solution provider

July 15, 2025

From displays and tablets to portable workstations and mission computers, the company has grown into a premier provider for data processing and information visualization hardware.

By Jaime Torres, Vice President & General Manager, ArgonFDS

I recently had an interesting conversation with a long-time customer. Within the first five minutes, they mentioned needing a “display supplier” for their upcoming program. This reputation is well-earned: Over our 35-year history, we’ve solved integration challenges on platforms across multiple domains — from 700-meter depth submarine connections to helicopter-mounted systems that process multiple data streams simultaneously.

At our core, we solve a fundamental challenge: transforming raw data into actionable information for mission-critical applications. Whether processing sensor data in our mission computers or visualizing complex information on our displays, every ArgonFDS solution addresses this central need. Our 35-year reputation as a display company is actually built on something deeper — we’ve always been in the information business.

This broader mission became clear as we talked through their program requirements. They also needed mission computers — a growing area of expertise for us. What started as a display conversation evolved into a discussion about their complete information systems architecture and a computer solution guaranteed to “play well” with the displays. Along with rugged displays and mission computers, we also design and manufacture rugged tablets and portable workstations, adding up to a suite of C5ISR hardware solutions for defense applications.

This focus on information solutions has become even more critical as today’s mission requirements have evolved. Our customers are looking for partners who can provide complete hardware ecosystems rather than managing multiple vendors across different product categories.
I’ve watched customers discover new possibilities when they learn about our complete capabilities. Instead of managing separate relationships for displays, mission computers and tablets, they can work with a single partner who understands how these components work together to create superior system performance.

Why the market timing is right

While the display market has always been a red ocean with too many competitors — new companies constantly entering and even our customers attempting to build their own displays — mission computers and tablets are more of a blue ocean for us. The reason is simple: Mission computers and tablets are significantly more difficult to develop. They require embedded design expertise, complex thermal management, and sophisticated data processing capabilities. These technical barriers naturally limit competition.

We’re seeing this shift in our own growth metrics. While displays still represent about half of our revenue with incremental growth, tablets and mission computers have been growing at double-digit rates in the last few years. This represents tremendous growth opportunity for ArgonFDS and our customers.

Complete information solutions capability

Here’s how I think about what we really do: We’re in the business of data processing and information visualization for mission-critical applications. That’s more accurate than saying we make displays, or mission computers, or tablets. Those are the components we use to solve the fundamental challenge of getting the right information to the right people at the right time in the harshest environments imaginable.

ArgonFDS develops embedded computing systems that meet the unique demands of military aircraft, ground vehicles, and naval platforms. We focus on providing the processing power and data-handling capabilities that these applications require, packaged in hardware that can survive and perform where commercial solutions may fail.

Our integrated product ecosystem

When we think about our capabilities as an integrated ecosystem, here’s how I see it broken down into its components:

  • Information display solutions: Beyond traditional displays, we’re developing smart display technologies that bring processing capabilities directly to the presentation layer. These aren’t just screens — they’re intelligent interfaces that can process and filter information locally.
  • Mobile computing platforms: Our tablet solutions provide field-deployable computing that maintains connectivity and processing power across diverse operational environments.
  • Embedded mission processing: Our mission computer family, including our compact ACB series, delivers full computing capabilities in constrained spaces. These systems handle sensor data fusion and communication processing in SWaP-constrained applications
  • Portable workstation systems: Complete computing solutions designed for rapid deployment and operation in forward locations where traditional IT infrastructure isn’t available.

Solving real-world mission challenges

Let me share some recent examples that illustrate the breadth of applications we’re supporting. The mission computer market demonstrates why technical complexity works in our favor. Recently, one of our customers had another supplier fail to deliver after promising 40 weeks — then requesting 40 more — demonstrating what we’ve learned over 35 years: Not every company claiming mission computer capability can actually deliver. We completed their helicopter retrofit solution in 26 weeks.

Our mission computers have been deployed in diverse scenarios:

  • Mobile defense systems that require real-time threat processing in battlefield conditions
  • Naval applications where space and power are at a premium in high-vibration, saltwater environments
  • Helicopter-based systems that need to process multiple data streams integrated with existing avionics
  • Airborne platforms where weight and reliability are critical factors — especially for extended surveillance missions

Each of these applications present unique engineering challenges. The mobile defense system needed processing power in a compact form factor. The naval application required systems that could operate reliably in high-vibration, marine environments. The helicopter system needed to integrate with existing avionics while adding new capabilities. The airborne platform demanded the highest reliability standards while minimizing weight impact.

Engineered for extreme environments

Our approach to hardware design reflects the realities of defense and aerospace applications. We customize these systems for specific mission requirements, whether that means specialized input/output capabilities, enhanced security features, or environmental hardening that goes beyond standard military specifications. This level of customization is possible because we control the entire hardware design and manufacturing process.

The defense and aerospace sectors are evolving rapidly. Autonomous systems are becoming more sophisticated and numerous. Multi-domain operations require unprecedented information sharing and processing capabilities. Electronic warfare is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with conventional approaches.
In this environment, you need hardware partners able to provide complete systems. What we provide are integrated solutions that reduce your engineering overhead while improving system performance.

Expanding our partnership with our customers

I’m excited about the opportunity to change how customers think about ArgonFDS. Whether your challenge is processing massive data streams, presenting complex information clearly, or providing mobile computing capabilities in extreme environments, we’re equipped to provide integrated solutions that address your complete requirements.

For your next C5ISR program, ask us one question: “How can we simplify our information architecture?” Whether you need faster data processing, clearer information display, or both in a single integrated unit, we’ll apply our 35 years of proven experience solving mission-critical challenges to deliver exactly what your mission demands.
